COURSE DESCRIPTION: The objective of this honors course is to integrate what was learned in Spanish 1 and 2 with the new third year concepts and vocabulary. There is continued emphasis on all of the communicative skills. Integration of cultural information pertaining to the designated topics occurs where appropriate. Students will read El Último Secreto and watch the corresponding videos. They will also read literary selections from other sources.
COMMUNICATIVE OBJECTIVES: Within the context of the target language and culture, the student will be able to:
· Give detailed and extended information about the topics listed.
· Ask others for information.
· Comprehend extended answers to questions.
· Express and share emotions such as hopes, expectations, worries and fears.
· Recount, comprehend and react to a sequence of events.
· Summarize and react to movies, TV programs, books, magazine/newspaper articles and text from the Internet in the target language.
· Comprehend and react to current events and issues.
· Create original narratives.
· Draw conclusions from information presented.
· Offer choices.
· Influence, encourage and defend decisions.
· State pros and cons of issues.
· Comprehend connected discourse (i.e. two and three paragraphs in length)
· Understand main ideas and seek some supporting details from authentic materials (materials from the target country(ies).
· Understand and react to extended conversations, monologues and/or texts. Predict some outcomes, draw simple conclusions and give opinions.
· Discuss literary selections appropriate for level.
· Express preferences for a text and give supporting details.
· Narrate in present, past and future.
· Compose cohesive paragraphs that describe, compare or contrast people, places, things, activities, situations and events.
· Develop organized summaries, compositions and reports on articles of more than one paragraph.
· Express and support emotions, feelings and personal points of view.
· Compose simple poetry (e.g. haiku, cinquain, diamante, tearful ballad or corrida).
· Give instructions for completing task.
· Research, outline and summarize information from sources such as magazines, periodicals, television and the Internet to learn about issues important to the target culture.
· Discuss films and videos from or about the target culture to acquire information and draw inferences about social, cultural and economic realities.
Learn about factors and issues that impact social, political or economic decisions.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
1. The student will be in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. Tardies will be dealt with as outlined in the CHS Student Handbook (p. 14).
2. The student will bring his/her textbook, notebook, pen or pencil and any other necessary materials to class each day.
3. Bring your books home every night. If there is no written assignment, review the current topics.
4. The student will demonstrate acceptable classroom behavior, showing respect for others, following instructions and being attentive in the classroom.
5. The student will do his/her own work at all times. Any incidence of cheating will be dealt with as outlined in the CHS Student Handbook (p. 25 – 26).
6. THE STUDENT MAY NOT CHEW GUM OR USE ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES
WITHOUT PERMISSION.
7. DO ask questions when you need further explanation or clarification. I want you to have a successful year.
GRADING SCALE: A = 90 - 100 B = 80 - 89 C = 70 - 79 F = 0 - 69
GRADING POLICY: Final semester grades will be calculated as follows:
1. Tests - 25% - at least 1 per chapter. (30%-60% of each test will be based on oral/aural skills.**)
2. Homework – 5% - Since I feel that students should have the opportunity to learn without being penalized for errors, homework will only be checked for completion and genuine effort.
Each completed assignment will be worth 5 points, 1 point will be given for incomplete work and 0 for unacceptable work.
3. Quizzes - 15%
4. Daily grades - (writing, classwork, projects,selected lab work**....) - 10%
5. Oral / aural** - (speeches, listening, selected lab work....) - 15%
6. Participation** & cooperation - 15%
7. Final exam - 15%
**At least 40% of the final average will be based on oral/aural work.
MAKE-UP POLICY:
1. Consistent daily attendance is essential to learn a foreign language, therefore absences should be avoided when possible.
2. Missed graded work must be made up within 5 school days after the absence occurs. Any work not made up within this time will receive a "0".
3. Make-ups must be arranged on the day of your return. There will be a calendar in the
classroom to sign up for make-ups on designated days.
4. If you are present on the day a test/quiz is announced, you are expected to take it if you are in class on the day it is given.
5. Missed homework must be made up and shown to me the day after you return.
**6. If you have TAG or a field trip, you are NOT absent and MUST submit your work for that day. you are also responsible for the following day’s assignments.
7. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT WHAT HAS BEEN MISSED AND TO HAVE IT IN ON TIME.
EXTRA HELP: Extra help is available whenever needed. Please see me to arrange a mutually convenient time.
RECOVERY: ( see handbook p. 6 – 7)
1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when ALL work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements, including attendance.
Students should contact the teacher concerning the recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester.
2. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
